ArsTannery #04/2022: Leather still a protagonist in the furniture industry

From the leather used in the furniture industry, which is still registering positive figures, to the latest events in the tannery sector. Among the pages of this issue of Tannery, all the latest and most interesting news from the sector!

Despite the great uncertainties affecting the market, the furniture sector continues to record positive data, as demonstrated by the success of the last Salone del Mobile 2022 held in Milan last June.

Covid under lockdown and home working have made us discover the centrality of our home taking its revenge on the city in terms of new needs, functions, attention. In this issue you will find a taste of the many novelties made with leather, a material still chosen by designers to give comfort and elegance to their creations. Among the seat coverings and more, leather remains the protagonist, mostly smooth, sometimes intertwined, often suede. The latest trend is to combine parts covered in leather with parts in fabric: a winning combination that creates pleasant new material and chromatic effects.

In this issue we obviously also talk about the latest events that animated the sector, from the Freiberg Leather Days last May which presented the developments in the leather chemical sector to the latest news in preparation for the IULTCS EuroCongress in September. From the statements of the European Confederation of the Leather Industry (Cotance), which rejects with incontrovertible reasons the accusations of deforestation addressed to the leather industry, to the long-awaited suspension of the Higg Index which assigns more favorable sustainability scores to synthetic fibers than to natural ones using outdated and incomplete data and calculation models.

Finally, the latest news from the best chemical, tanning and technological companies, more than ever committed to offering solutions that are increasingly respectful of the environment.

ArsTannery #04-2023: The substantive sustainability of the Italian tannery

There is a system that seems to focus everything on “formal sustainability” and there are those who, like the Italian tannery, represent an example of “substantial sustainability.” These were the words of President Fabrizio Nuti at the last UNIC assembly, who reiterated how there are not many industries whose raw material is derived from a waste from another supply chain. Italian tanners, moreover, have gone further by putting in place “a recycling and reuse chain of their production waste in tanneries that has no equal, treating and reusing it for the cosmetics industry, the food industry, agriculture and construction. The result is a circularity rate of more than 99 percent.”
